Historical Melaka

The weekend before last was an eventful one. After the bloggers’ meet, we headed down to Melaka for my friend’s wedding on Saturday. The wedding was in the afternoon, so we went on a journey into the past in Melaka.

A famosa: Melaka’s famous Portuguese fort.

The maritime museum housed in a galleon.

Of all the plaques, this was Joseph’s favourite. Muahahaha!

Jonker street and the surrounding area. Rubik’s cube for RM2. Guess what got him interested in a Rubik’s cube…

Melaka’s famous chicken rice balls. This shop in Jonker street serves really good chicken rice balls.

Not forgetting the reason I came in the first place: Dr. George (another George, not the George of Odysseys) .

Georges, Thomases, Abrahams and Vargheses. ;-)

Japanese layer cake on Father’s Day! Really good! Whatalulu pointed out later that Jason had reviewed it before a loooooong time ago. Here. Must go to Melaka for it ;-)

Remedies for the common cold: Echinacea and Vitamin C?

Palmdoc posted a review of a new study published in the Lancet Infectious Diseases on the effective use of Echinacea for the common cold. This one seems to show that Echinacea helps, compared to a previous study that didn’t show any benefit.

However, as palmdoc pointed out, this is a metaanalysis. For the readers here, a meta-analysis is a type of study that pools together the data from a number of smaller studies in order to obtain enough subjects to try to obtain a statistically significant conclusion. Therefore, the quality of a meta-analysis is only as good as the quality of the studies which are included in the meta-analysis. If the data from the component studies was not well-collected, the meta-analysis would be flawed as well.

Do go by to palmdoc’s post here to follow an interesting discussion on Echinacea and Vitamin C for the common cold. Do we have the answer to the question of whether Vitamin C is effective for the common cold? Read on..

Echinacea

Also, palmdoc gives us the link to another (more comprehensive) discussion on Vitamin C for common colds.

One of our ex-teachers here used to swear on Echinacea but after a couple of years, I constantly hear that she has bad colds, coughs and chest infections.
    I believe in self immunity.

By the way, is there 4 generations there? Joshua, Bernard, Bernard’s dad and Bernard’s grand-dad? Could you please describe the flavour of the cake? Just curious to see if I can try making it or is it an impossible task?

I remember eating those chicken rice balls. taste like ordinary chicken rice, just the novelty of it mashed up in balls that made it fun, lol! where’s that signature red building of Malacca leh?

I gave up on the rubik’s cube five minutes after trying it out, perseverance was never one of my strong points. But I’m certain if I did have some perseverance, I would have gotten at least a few sides *ahem*

And for the benefit of those in KL, there’s a shop selling Mille Crepe cake in section 17. A small little cafe called “the foundry”. Ate it once, it IS good. =)

Abrahams? I went to University with an Abraham from Malaysia. Though he lives in Atlanta now.

Looks like a neat place to visit. Looks like Joseph enjoyed himself too.

LB, err.. you need BOTH hands to work the Rubik’s cube. Save the chicken rice balls for later. :-)

Judy, yup! Go get the bug and you’ll be immune the next time around. Haha.

No no.. that’s my Dad’s friend and former classmate. He was our kind host during our visit to Melaka.

There are photos of it on Jason’s blog. It’s made up of many thin layers, but not as discrete as Indonesian layer cakes. Tastes lightly creamy and very fluffy.

May, yes.. tastes like ordinary chicken rice. Hehe.

Here’s the red building for May… the Stadhyus is on the right (these are Dutch) :-)

    Anastasia, here’s help for you… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jkft2qaKv_o

Joseph said, “Papa, you must learn from him.”

Seriously though.. if you look at the related videos from there, you’ll find some tutorials on how to solve it. Beware the spoilers :-)

Ah.. yes.. Section 17, there was a post on it as well… somewhere.

CSH, ahh.. yes. He was probably with Prof’s team then.

Chelsea, sunburn in Melaka? What did you do there to earn a sunburn?

Simple American, “Abraham” is one of the more commonly found Malayali names. They are originally from Kerala in India.

  16. yenjai.net June 28, 2007 8:25 pm

For the cake shop, Section 17 as in Petaling Jaya?

  17. anastasia June 28, 2007 11:37 pm

    yenjai,
Yes. Section 17 as in PJ. It’s on the ground floor of block B of the flats there. A block (I think) away from the SK Sri Damai.

  18. yenjai.net June 29, 2007 8:37 am

    anastasia. Thanks.
I will get some particular blogger from section 17 *hint hint* to get it for me (big grin)

  19. eastcoastlife June 29, 2007 1:21 pm

I couldn’t find the Ping Pong Chicken Rice Balls when I was in Malacca. OK, will look for them again. I like the food in Malacca, especially the Peranakan food. Ooooo…. sedap!!

  20. Bernard June 29, 2007 1:53 pm

LM, how heavy are you taking them? Works for a lot of people too. For want of a better thing to do, Vit C is ok. There is some evidence of it helping.

Hijackqueen, you had layer cake too? Uahh.. looks like a trip to Melaka is not complete without it, eh?

Chelsea, sleeveless? Cari pasal la tu.

Jonzz, the scene in “In Pursuit of Happyness” :-)

    Yenjai, sooo clever la!

    Anastasia, thanks!

Eastcoastlife, yess… the food is lemakkkk and cukup masam. Haha.

It helps if you have a local guide. Teehee.

  21. Chelsea June 29, 2007 6:12 pm
