Photo Hunters : “Water”

The themes over the past few weeks have been somewhat related to “water”, so looking for photos for the theme was a bit of a challenge.

The WATER-WAYS are the HIGH-WAYS in the interior of Sarawak on the island of Borneo. Many parts are inaccessible by road and the rivers are the main route of transport. Here is the Baram River in Miri Division of Sarawak.

View of Baram River from the air.

The Melinau River by night..

Long boat up the rapids

And a bit more “action”…

An underground river feeding the Baram. This is in the Mulu Cave complex.

A rushing river in the caves…

While we’re at the caves… i might as well show some other cave photos…

  10. sbanboy March 31, 2007 7:15 pm

Wow I really like the pic no 2 with the reflection … wow

  11. Bernard March 31, 2007 8:53 pm

Pelf, do go… you’ll love it.

Imma, the hill in the night scene is called “Pala Hill”

…. “Pala” being short for “kepala”, i.e. head. The Hill of Heads. Guess what were buried there.

Hint: the natives were head-hunters a long, long time ago.

Capt Picard, yes… i hope more people see the beauty of this place..

.. it’s the largest known cave chamber and the longest cave passage in the world.

Sbanboy, I like that one too :-)

I must say something about the underground shots… the caves were in almost complete darkness except for torchlights. The shutter was opened for 15 secs to get the shots. It was just trial and error… I was pleasantly surprised at the result. *ahem*

Wondering if there are any caves in your dream destination?

  13. George March 31, 2007 11:46 pm

Hi Bernard, I am back but not for long before my next dive!

Great shots! My favourite cave is the Clearwater Cave. My guide then took me thru the cave where the track was great. Had one of my most memorable experience there.

The photo from air is just awesome!

  15. jonzz April 1, 2007 4:42 pm

Somehow seeing so much flowing water makes me feel like taking a leak… HA HA

  16. meeyauw April 2, 2007 12:48 am

Great photos! The aerial photo is so impressive. It looks so muddy but the shots from the surface don’t look that muddy. You are so fortunate to be able to explore there.

  17. eastcoastlife April 2, 2007 1:03 am

huh? You took the photos? Not bad leh! Very nice photos!

I won’t want to go into the caves, so dark & scary! I would worry about the bats and whatever insects! I would be screaming all the time. lol…. beat me to death also won’t go wan.

  18. yenjai.net April 2, 2007 9:13 am

Haha. Eastcoastlife, you are so funny :P

  19. Bernard April 2, 2007 10:13 am

just me, dream destination: meaning NZ? I don’t recall reading about caves there; but to see caves, go to Sarawak.

George, welcome back! Yes.. clearwater cave and deer caves were my favourites. Got some photos of the trip to share?

p.s. What was the memorable part? Eh?

lessake, like the clouds. :-) It was from a Fokker 50.

jonzz, relieved ard? Hehe.. I should have included sound so that you can HEAR running water…

meeyauw, the aerial photo is of Baram river, which is the bigger river, and the surface shots are of Melinau, which feeds the Baram.. the Melinau water is clear.

    eastcoastlife, yup.. moi. :-)

Aiyoo.. these caves are “user-friendly” ones la. Really. The usual tracks are lit. And there’s a guide. In fact, a guide is compulsory.

  21. yenjai.net April 2, 2007 12:36 pm

ahpek, errr… why do I get the idea you are not talking the same thing as Bernard? ^-^

Bernard, I went to Gua Tempurung, before they really open it up for … tourism. Had to go in on all four. Then … wah lau … started raining … and water started coming into the tunnel … we were crawling in one foot of water.

That is enough. No more cave for me

  22. eastcoastlife April 2, 2007 12:42 pm

Thanks Bernard for the info but still, pah si aso dun wan go in a cave, see yenjai’s example. hahaha…..

ahpek is obviously in a world of his own! :) I have the same thought as yenjai. Hi-5, man!

  26. Bernard April 3, 2007 1:26 am

Ah Pek, I know that… already.

    … and “black dogs” too?

yenjai, aiyoo.. Gua Tempurung is actually more dangerous than Mulu.
