&lt;strong&gt;jonzz&lt;/strong&gt;, some patients don't get it once in a blue moon. They get it everyday.. and they suffer for it. And there's an increased risk of gastro-oesophageal junction cancer. 

Most, the vast majority, don't need surgery and they are well with long term medications, or they live with it. But some do.
