It’s time for the Saturday Photo Hunt again. Here’s something salty that I see everyday…

Here’s a closer look at the source of the “salty” fluid.

It’s “normal saline” a.k.a. 0.9% Sodium Chloride.

0.9% NaCl has an osmolarity of 300mmol/L which is the same osmolarity of human body fluids. That’s why it’s called “normal saline”.

Here’s another commonly used fluid that is iso-osmolar (the same osmolarity as body fluids):

Recognize the components?

It’s Hartmann’s solutions. The contents are shown in the label.

These are life-saving salty stuff.

  15. Barbara H. March 3, 2007 10:48 pm

Well, I never would’ve guessed, but thought, “Duh! I should have” when I saw the answer. Great pics for today!

That’s cool: just be zooming up to a subject, our perception is distorted and we can’t figure it out. Great entry.

  18. jenny March 3, 2007 11:33 pm

  20. chelsea March 3, 2007 11:59 pm

Haha…I got it right at a second thoughts…1st thought it was for pumping poo…hehe…=P

  21. srps March 4, 2007 12:51 am

Saw the drop and figured it was an IV of either normal saline, ringers lactate or something like that.

  22. Bernard March 4, 2007 12:57 pm

Capt Picard, you’re lucky not to have received it before :-)

Hi Incog, hi Nito, your’s is GROSS. Ewwww…

    Larry, sorry to hear that.

Ah Pek, so “ham ham sap sap” one….

… for those who don’t know Cantonese, “ham sap” literally means “salty and wet”…. a.k.a. “horny”.

eve, how is it? Good or not?

… here, give you sodium picophosphate…

Chen, hahahaha… for that i’d have to order from the pharmacy downstairs.

… hmmm… i wonder whether it’ll actually taste more salty than normal saline on our human tastebuds.

George, you join the photo huntes and do that lah!

… actually, Mama Duck did post a kid at the ocean-side.

Diana, suggestive of ……. ? I’d love to know what’s on your mind.

Kat, well.. learn something new everyday. :-)

Anni, those OLD SALTS look adorable.. I know they weren’t supposed to.. but they do.. love them. :-)

Judy, clever girl! Here’s your prize *muaksss*

… yes, they’re the same. But the product for IV administration needs stricter control. They’re both manufactured via reverse osmosis filtration. Multiple times.

Chelsea, i’m not about poo ALL the time. :-)

srps, hahaha.. right on! “Hartmann’s” is also called “Ringer’s-Lactate”.

  23. jonzz March 4, 2007 5:49 pm

Ah ha! The drip! I knew it. (Is it?) LOL!

  24. Bernard March 4, 2007 7:45 pm

    jonzz, yes it is!

  25. Diana March 5, 2007 7:39 am

  27. Teena in Toronto March 5, 2007 10:50 am

cool pix … I have no idea what it is, though.

    Mine’s up too :)

  28. Bernard March 5, 2007 12:24 pm

Diana, nvm.. you tell me in private la. Hahaha.

    Yenjai, dun bully her la.

Teena, it’s a drip chamber for administering intravenous saline. There’s a drop of saline dripping down to the drip line.

  29. Chen March 5, 2007 7:18 pm

i have never tasted the 3% saline but the 0.9% NS tasted horrible :P
    hahhaa

  30. Bernard March 6, 2007 2:40 pm

Chen, horrible indeed. Bowel prep also tastes like that.

  31. Sweetpea March 6, 2007 8:05 pm

never used that before, hope i don’t have to. but i did pop one into the microwave for a while and used it as a heat pack while i was pregnant :P
