Paracetamol causes hypertension?
A recent study warned that there was a moderate increase in the risk of hypertension (high blood pressure) in people who used painkillers on a regular basis (at least 6 days a week, that’s almost everyday). The study was on non-narcotic painkillers (i.e. not morphine or a similar drug). The users of acetaminophen (that’s the equivalent of paracetamol in the US), aspirin and other NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) all were found to have an increased risk of new diagnosis of hypertension.
The study, Frequency of Analgesic Use and Risk of Hypertension Among Men, by researchers from Harvard, was published in the February 26th issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine.
Don’t panic. I would like to point out that it was for patients who used the drugs on a regular basis almost every day.

And I thought that an aspirin a day keeps the stroke away?
just me, that is still true.
No more paracetamol *Sob*
And I just had 2 a few nights ago, after so many years.
LOL!
i take panadol almost on a daily basis..the pain in my leg just wont go away..how do i know if i have hypertension? i go bonkers if i take aspirin..bedridden for hrs..face head body everything jus kembang n red and sort of like allergy …dont know why
That would be my dad! When I worked in a radiology, I was told that taking an aspirin a day thins your blood….true?
I just read Just me’s comment. So it sounds like I am not the only who heard this ‘truth/myth’.
ermmmm….actually, you’d be surprised at the number of mothers who take painkillers on a regular basis. This, the new drug addicts.
HOOOI!!! Not me la. My painkiller is natural one. Berak on a daily basis…damn SHIOK man!!!!
jonzz, don’t fret. Two is good.
Bengbeng, have you found out why the leg hurts everyday?
The aspirin reaction: it’s an allergy.
Judy, aspirin “thins” your blood by it’s effect on the platelets (one the component of blood that causes clotting). So it is true that aspirin prevents blood from “unintentionally” clotting within the blood vessels; which could lead to heart attacks and strokes.
mott, you get a kick out of it, don’t you?
I sprained my ankle and went to see a chong ee…or sinseh…was unable to move for a few days..walk i mean..until today which is 6 months already, my leg still feels the pain
Bengbeng, oic. No wonder you need painkillers. Gotten it examined for other causes or other injuries already?
I forgot to reply to your question about hypertension. You can get your blood pressure tested at the nearest clinic; a number of readings over a few days. That will tell you whether you have hypertension.
Thank you.
116/75 sometimes 120/77
bengbeng, that is normal.
Sleep well tonight
Oppsss….thanks for the reminder ….
