Pretty in pink

After all the complaints that I’ve been posting gross photos (except jonzz, who not affected “any-so-ever”), I’m going to show you how pretty the intestines can look from the inside. Actually, the beauty of the inside of the gut is breath-taking (if you even dare to breathe ;-) ).

Moreover, although they do age, i.e. they undergo genetic mutations and genetic degeneration, they don’t show the signs of aging that you see in the skin. When you look at or hold the bowel in your hands, you find that you cannot guess the age of the bowel. Children not withstanding, of course. They look as pristine as ever and smooth as it was created to be. You might say that aging looks skin-deep. Plunge in with me …

The coral-like soft and silky projections that you see swaying in the intestinal fluid are the villi (rings a bell?) that line the inside of the small intestines. They function to absorb the digested material in the intestines. Lovely sight to behold.

They are the prettiest sight during every colonoscopy because it means that you’re reached the small intestines (proof that the entire colon has been examined).

Pink means healthy eh. :) I’ve few questions to ask.

    1. I wonder how long is human colon (small + big)?
    2. At wht length, waste starting to accumulate before reaching the rectum?
    3. What is the average storage time for waste before being passed out?
    4. Ppl says, if the waste stored too long (constipation), it will “poison” the colon?? Is tht true?

Thanks in advance for answering. :)

    just me, I will :-)…

Ah Pek, beeeeauuuutifullll mahh… no meh????

mott, yes! just like other intestines.

    hoiling, pink is healthy, usually.

    1. err.. colon means large intestines only … that’s about 120 cm long.
    2. the contents turn gradually from liquid to solid in the transverse colon and descending colon, that’s probably about 60 to 90 cm from the anus (the bottom end). They’re usually solid by the time they get to the sigmoid colon (30 to 60 cm from the anus).
    3. average will be less than a day.. but the range is wide… they could be kept for days… it depends on how much bulk is in the stools and the peristalsis action of the intestines.
    4. I wouldn’t say that the stools “poison” the colon… but a low-fibre and high animal fat diet is a risk factor for colorectal cancer.

Just maybe (no evidence), prolonged storage of a particualr batch of stools (presumably some bacterial or chemical changes occur) might increase the risk of colorectal cancer.

    jonzz, chee cheong chok ah?

Yikes, bernard are you having withdrawals? I did not know your inclinations to these pink thingy? Actually the small bowel is alright except when it is covered with that green bile. But the large intestine - never!

Must go eat “chee yong choke” now, if I can find any.

Queen, what has pink got to do with virginity? Hmmm?

just me, an intestinal transplant is rarely needed. Usually, it is done for patients who have lost almost the entire length of small intestines.

FireHorse, remember to take some fabulous fruits with that. ;-)
