Christmas Dinner

The Penang Medical Christian Fellowship held its annual Christmas dinner on Tuesday evening. Medical staff from various hospitals in Penang and Seberang Perai, and one fella from Sg Petani attended this annual do by the PMCF.

The dinner was at Tanjung Bungah Hotel. It was good to have met some old friends there. The “Anchormen”, an acapella choir from the Adventist Hospital gave a sterling performance. Dr. Andy Lim from Ipoh related to us, in a most witty manner, the testimony of how he came to know God. It was hilarious, yet heart-warming. Mrs. Lim rendered two chinese songs in her soprano voice.

The food and atmosphere was good; much better than I remember from previous functions at this hotel. Kudos to Dr. Tan and his team.

MP3 to FM modulator

This gadget is interesting. It’s called a “FM modulator”. What is a “modulator” anyway? Well whatever it’s called, here’s how it works : you plug a USB flash memory device (a.k.a. thumb drive, pendrive, card reader) containing .mp3 files and plug the device into the cigarette lighter socket of the car. The gadget with read the mp3 files and transmit it as FM radio signal. You switch the car radio on and tune in to the FM channel that the gadget is transmitting on. Voila! You have a device in the car to play music from your thumbdrive.

If you have an mp3 player or ipod, you can plug it into the line-in socket at the side of the device and it will transmit the signals to the car radio. Nifty!

Starwalk

Starwalk has been one of the highlights of Penang community for years. More than 10 thousand people throng the roads on this annual walk-for-fun event organised by The Star newspaper on 10th December. This one is a leisurely walk for most, although
some do join in the competition category.

Joseph went with the grandparents for the walk. They joined a group of Kong-kong’s old friends who were veterans at fitness events such as these.

Don’t assume it’s piles… it could be cancer.

Eve commented on my earlier post:

i had a patient , 27 yrs old, pregnant , complaining of piles..was treated everywhere and given Daflon for abt 6 months..n still complaining of bleeding every time at stool..she came to see me for the pregnancy actually…which i did a scan n bb was alright..i referred her to UMMC , n they found her to have cancer of the rectum…the patient was advised to terminate her pregnancy..which she refused..n has since gone home to Sarawak..i don’t know what happen to her after that….bleeding n pain does not necessarily mean piles..

And George said “assumption” is “a sum o’ sins”. If we “assume”, we’ll end up making an “ass” out of “u” and “me”.

The next photo came from a patient who had treatment for piles for months before she had a proper diagnosis made. And it turned out to be a low rectal cancer. The rectum and the anus were resected, she had a permanent colostomy formed and she received radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Unfortunately for her, the cancer recurred after initial treatment; and became locally advanced.
