Egrets on Sungai Merbok
Egrets are abundant over Merbok this week. Fishing in the swaps and the Merbok River, they frolick near this jetty next to the bridge to Semeling and Lembah Bujang at the foothills of Gunung Jerai. What impresses me about them is the posture that they maintain when they’re resting. Perfectly erect. Absolutely Majestic!
I wonder whether they’re particularly abundant this time of the year? Perhaps they are on the way South; and have just stopped by for a breather. I used to see many egrets in Bintulu where I worked many (ok, relatively many) years ago. They seemed to be more of them around around this time of the year too.

Bangau di Sungai Merbok

Fishing in the idyllic Merbok

The egret’s posture you describe speaks to me of “stillness” and ” strength”…something I can apply in my spiritual life!
you’re a birdwatcher?
From the pictures and posts you’ve put up, Kedah seems to be a nature haven. Maybe you can recommend some cool places and stuff about Kedah if one chooses to take a holiday there?
jan, yup.. unwavering.
nyonya, i watch all sortsa birds.
jonzz, a holiday in Kedah would be a very “green” sort of holiday.
Bernard, the last option sounds the best
i like fishing..but i dun like the sun..i dun like to put on the bait..i dun like to wait.. i dun like to unhook the fish mouth..i dun like to touch the fish..eh..then which part of fishing i like?..the biting part..dem kan cheong..keekkekee….
yenjai, bila mau mai lepak kat sini?
eve, which one more kan cheong? being bitten or biting?
Any food specialities in Sg Petani? Maybe you can blog about that?
Heheh! Thought your name sounds familiar until i saw your pic @ your w’site. Thanx you for teaching me all those stuff during my housemanship.
errr. the famous pedu lake also right? nature and golf at doorstep. too bad it is just a little too far off.
During this time round the birds are migrating to …. dunno where. I’ve seen different type of species in Klang before. Some just hang around at Federal Highway.
jan, food ah? gotttt!..
just that i’m not very comfortable taking out my camera and shooting my food in public
I dunno how our blogging frens can do it?? Shall give it a try… there’s a first time for everything, eh?
drfrappucino, hi and welcome! i didn’t know you knew me personally :-). Err… from UM i guess?
LM, yup Pedu too. That’s for a “hideaway” sort of holiday.
Bernard, people use camera-phones to point at the food. Its less obvious than a camera.
In Sg Petani? How come I never been there ah? Doink~~!!!
There r sooo many waterfalls like Bukit Hijau, Sg Sedim in Kulim, Ulu Legong Hot Springs in Baling, Gunung Keriang (limestone hill) in Alor Star,Pedu Lake, Langkawi…..everything u want from mother nature can be found in Kedah.
But can’t find a decent cinema or shopping mall lor….
the place looks so serene. should have taken close-ups of the egrets. all i see are white flecks everywhere *grins*
Hijackqueen, good thing that they fly away south. otherwise, we won’t get to see them at on our soil :-). I’m a traveller too.
LM, thanks for the tip. But can’t get good photos with my cameraphone.
Kenny, kesian… but.. but.. what is it that’s you’ve noticed that made you go “doink”?
Eskay, yup.. i haven’t gone to gunung keriang yet worr.. Only one cinema in Kedah.. that’s in Central Square in SP. Did you know that it closes on Thursday evenings?
me, yes, the photos of the egrets are rather small… i should get closer or use a telephoto, but my camera telephoto only goes up to 105mm… so i cheat loh… i take maciam i purposely want to show the river banks and the mountain and the sky liddat… shhh..
Bernard, where got so kua chiong… got one cinema in SP, got one too in alor setar wat. ohh…, may be d one in alor setar not so decent?? ok lah, so now we know got 2 cinema in Kedah. anyone want to add on??
overall, i think SP is still better than alor setar. didnt know that till i was there *Shock* Ha?!
I always thought Kedah is a sleepy town. Didn’t know there are many nice place around. I haven’t been to Langkawi!! Should do a walk-walk there when have more time.
Hello there, Bernard. Found your website through some medical links. I am a medical student in my 5th year. i have some medical advice to seek from you. Hope you will get back to me. Thank you and God bless

Bernard, my schedule is not mine to arrange

yenjai, always the dedicated lokun in big city PJ, hehe.
LM, traveling means.. seeing sumthing that you don’t see everyday.
Hey, kulim tarak cinema la.. McD also dun hv ..er.. last year la, not sure about this year. Got KFC n Pizza Hut only…;(
Nevertheless, kulim has the best weather coz its hilly n lots of waterfalls.. Wah! Like promoting this place ;p
I guess SP is the most developed town in the whole state.
Eskay, i guess you’re the authority on Kulim ard :-)..
SP is developing.. but Alor Setar is a bandaraya already.
Lovely. So they are called bangau?
happysurfer, yup they’re the famous “bangau”s.
