Egrets on Sungai Merbok

Egrets are abundant over Merbok this week. Fishing in the swaps and the Merbok River, they frolick near this jetty next to the bridge to Semeling and Lembah Bujang at the foothills of Gunung Jerai. What impresses me about them is the posture that they maintain when they’re resting. Perfectly erect. Absolutely Majestic!

I wonder whether they’re particularly abundant this time of the year? Perhaps they are on the way South; and have just stopped by for a breather. I used to see many egrets in Bintulu where I worked many (ok, relatively many) years ago. They seemed to be more of them around around this time of the year too.

The egret’s posture you describe speaks to me of “stillness” and ” strength”…something I can apply in my spiritual life!

From the pictures and posts you’ve put up, Kedah seems to be a nature haven. Maybe you can recommend some cool places and stuff about Kedah if one chooses to take a holiday there?

  4. Bernard November 14, 2006 11:21 am

    jan, yup.. unwavering.

nyonya, i watch all sortsa birds. ;-)

jonzz, a holiday in Kedah would be a very “green” sort of holiday.

    • The most famous holiday site would be Langkawi, for the beaches, legends and duty-free shopping.
    • Besides that there are idyllic holiday spots like Gunung Jerai.
    • If you’re keen on nature adventures, there’s Sg Sedim in Kulim area, where you can go for white-water rafting, 4WD adventures, trek up Gunung Bintang, and of course, try the tree-top walk. See mistyeiz’s blog on it.
    • Driving around in Kedah is a pleasure because of the greens.
    • There’s a new water park being constructed in Sg Petani.
    • And you could come visit me ;-)

During this time round the birds are migrating to …. dunno where. I’ve seen different type of species in Klang before. Some just hang around at Federal Highway.

  13. LM November 14, 2006 10:39 pm

Bernard, people use camera-phones to point at the food. Its less obvious than a camera.

Hijackqueen, good thing that they fly away south. otherwise, we won’t get to see them at on our soil :-). I’m a traveller too.

LM, thanks for the tip. But can’t get good photos with my cameraphone.

Kenny, kesian… but.. but.. what is it that’s you’ve noticed that made you go “doink”?

Eskay, yup.. i haven’t gone to gunung keriang yet worr.. Only one cinema in Kedah.. that’s in Central Square in SP. Did you know that it closes on Thursday evenings?

me, yes, the photos of the egrets are rather small… i should get closer or use a telephoto, but my camera telephoto only goes up to 105mm… so i cheat loh… i take maciam i purposely want to show the river banks and the mountain and the sky liddat… shhh.. ;-)
