Talk on breast cancer et cetera, et cetera, et cetera… ??
Breast cancer is frequently-requested subject for public educational talks. Last week, a group of insurance agents invited me to give a talk on breast and other common female cancers. That’s nothing extraordinary. What was usual for me was that I gave it in Mandarin. It’s the second time ever that I’ve delivered a public talk in Chinese. Coming from a non-Chinese-medium school, I learned Chinese characters recently when my son started to learn Chinese in kindy. (Can’t let my son beat me, can I?)
How to do it? Just install Chinese fonts and input methods and use one of the many Chinese dictionary or translation web applications on the net to translate. I check with Chinese sites for Chinese articles on the subject matter and, occasionally, a knowledgeable Chinese-literate friend who can suggest the correct phrases for the context. And… voila! A presentation in Chinese. Of course, it may a take a healthy dose of “guts” as well.
Not to mention a huge serving of “enthusiasm”, just as the Prudential agents who attended the talk had.

Ohhhh yes!! These people are mega-enthusiatic.

so how do you say breast in mandarin?
Nai Nai? Nen Nen?
hahahaaaaa…naaahh..
i think you said,
“siung pu”
Breasts = ?? ru3fang2. Breast cancer = ??. Any other translations?

Hi Bernard, I was wondering, where do you host your website(s) at and how much does it cost?
Bernard, giving talks in Manderin?
I am totally speechless…..
Hey, maybe one day I should call you and we chat in Manderin?
Btw, are they receptive of the idea SBE?
eve, achelli i dunno how to write… can type only. ^_^
jonzz, hi. yenjai is the webmaster… yenjai, got an answer?
yenjai, can chat on msn/trillian too, eh?
Re: SBE = Self-Breast Examination for the uninitiated, yes most of them are keen to learn; but can’t tell how many actually do it on a regular basis.
Hi, Dr. You take the challenge,do mandarin presentation for us
all chinese educated .We appreciate it. Well done ! keep it up !
Hello BP, welcome here. Enjoyed it.
jonzz, welcome to the blog.
We host it on skynethosting.net
As for the cost, I provide it free for Bernard. So the answer is FOC ^-^
bernard, haha, no, I mean I want to see how your pronounce those words
breast cancer in mandarin sound ru3ai2. I’m opposite with u, I’m from Chinese ed and self learning in English. When I was in secondary, I can’t really write and speak English well. Learn Chinese is harder than English, salute you kaw kaw la Dr. Bernard!
kenny, yes. I would agree that learning English is much easier than learning Manderin.
Bernard here is really our role model.
yenjai, wah… can change language by just clicking a button ah? Wait until our re-union get-together lah. What ever happened to that project?
Kenny, I tabik to you too. Learning any language as an adult is a challenge. But it’s really satisfying too, eh?
yenjai, you can learn any language you want on the net ^_^ including “emoticon”ish.
Bernard, the only language I want to learn, is … father to son talk and daddy to daugther talk.
Guess that had to be learned the hard way, eh?
Hey yenjai, that’s not learning a language. That’s learning the character and temperament of your child. Got to do that on your home network. Hooked on that net?
Hi,Dr. if you want to learn & speak proper mandarin , you have to learn the very basic pin yin like b p m f & a lot…a lot more..just as in our school days to memorise a ba ca in Bahasa Malaysia. I don’t know how about in English,is it the same? have to learn from you pula.haha…
BP, thanks. Yes, i learn using hanyu pinyin. Don’t know bpmf, though. For English, nowadays, the children to read by phonetic rules they learn in kindy. It’s more systematic now. I used to learn by listening to my parents read only… i don’t remember learning any phonetic rules.
Dr. since u serious in learning chinese, I can assist u if got time. ur mandarin presentation is too good. wah! out of my expection.our customers keen to have female cancer knowledge too after our team member’s sharing. u are invited, do it just 1 more! ok? ask Ah Pek to join ur breast presentation next time, i am sure got lots..lots..of fun….

I’m always got misunderstood with my chinese pronouciation. tough language!
hoiling, as BP suggested, you could try learning with pinyin…..
or, alternatively, get a chinese-speaking friend who’ll laugh with you and correct you!!
hoiling, wanna try with me? ^-^
hoiling, yup… I can vouch for yenjai. hehe.
Hahaha ..sure. Cikgu Yenjai. No cane pls.
Wah! I really salute u, Bernard!! I can speak mandarin though not chinese ed (like u) but I dun speak those very standard, proper kinda mandarin.
I remember the first (n the last time) I gave a talk in chinese was in a chinese school– dental health talk la.. Simply taruk only. Use all sorts of layman’s term since i dunno the actual words myself. Luckily they’re a bunch of school kids, not adults..;p Not so malu…I dun think they really understood me anyway;p
SK, wah.. dat means u can goreng in mandarin oso lah. Some more in the Chinese school… not only the schoolkids there, mebbe the Guru Besar oso there, leh?
