A jacuzzi for the rear end: Sitz bath

How do you provide some relief for patients with pain in the perineal (between the anus and the scrotum/vagina) or peri-anal pain after, an open hemorrhoidectomy or even an episiotomy (after delivery)? Here’s a simple method to try out. Soak in a warm, salt-water bath. Having been used successfully for a long time to sooth the sensitive area, it’s place in post-op care is extremely valuable. It’s called a Sitz bath.

Here’s a gadget to ease the pain and keep the hygiene of the perineal and perianal region. Place the basin on any sitting toilet (it fits nicely). Fill up the bag with warm salt water. Fit the end of the tubing into a slot in the basin, adjusting it so that the tip points to you-know-where. Let the soothing, warm water flow down showering the area with comfort. When the bag is empty, just sit there and enjoy the nice warm feeling.

Sorry, got no demo pictures :-)

There’s an outlet below the brim, so as to direct spillage into the toilet

Is this going to help for sore Perineum due to too much cycling? :P

Hello LM, nice to see you again. Haven’t tried Sitz bath for that, but it might be useful. Why don’t you try it and tell me? :-)
My brother rides too, but haven’t heard him complain about it. (Taken with a stiff upper lip, maybe?)

Hi Bernard, thanks for the link. There is a certain risk in riding; and I’m sure your bro is well aware of ED caused by nerve damage. :P

LM, thanks for dropping by. Yes ar? I didn’t know that lah. What i do can cause ED lah…thankfully, usually temporarily. Mental note to self: stay away from those nerves. Stay away from those nerves.

Oh .. not painful huh? for the patient who has to sit on the hard suface when the cut is so raw?

    Nerve damage? caused ED???

hoiling, LM was talking about nerve damage from cycling. I was talking about nerve damage from rectal cancer surgery (that’s another big topic.) ED=erectile dysfunction=impotence.

There’s no contact between the raw surface and the basin. You might be able to see that there’s a raised edge all around, like a potty. The buttocks sits on the edge and the perineum and peri-anal region is not touching anything except the warm water.

Did this after I gave birth but the basin I got did not come with a bag. Was only told to put in warm salt water and sit on the basin. Was a great relief though… works so much better than the IR light that some hospitals use. :)

That’s Sitz bath too. Basically it’s warm, salt water bath. The bag’s a bit of extra value-added.

    lol…
first time i heard of sitz bath was when i went to clinical session at Royals women hospital in Sydney. I was pretty surprise this hospital actually provides special “home-environment” room where u can hv ur own toilet and bath tub. and give baby in a bath tub to help counteract the pain (>10hrs of contraction for first birth). THey practise sitz bath in a bath tub, which i thought kinda a waste of water, since AUs gov so paranoid abt water storage in Aus. Maybe u should send the photo to John Howard.

Bernard says, “Sounds like a very friendly hospital. It would be nice to work in this kind of environment. I’d be happy to send it to Mr. Howard. ‘Ave you got his address? ;-)”

OIC, no wonder lah you have to get the size that fits the gluteals too. You can’t sit on the edge of the basin for long mah ;-)
