Gallbladder surgery
I thought I’d answer one of the questions hoiling asked regarding my previous post as a new post so as to highlight it to the readers
Hi Bernard, If you cut out the whole gall bladder, will it affect certain functions? Or its just another appendix or wisdom tooth that didn?t add value to the body system? Bile = waste?
My reply, plus other comments:
Hi hoiling,
You?ve asked a question that most people will ask .
It?s like this: this gallbladder grows gallstones because it is not functioning properly. The bile flow from the GB is slow, so it forms stones. If we leave the GB, stones will form again.
Bile is some waste but not all waste. It?s function includes emulsifying fats and oils?(so that they can mix?with?water) to enable digestion and absorbtion. It?s produced by the liver. The function of the GB is to store bile and pump it out to the intestines when we take a meal.
Initially, after cholecystectomy (chole~=bile/gall, cyst~=bladder, ~ectomy=cut out), some patients may have diarrhoea for a while because of rapid bile flow (because there is no reservoir of bile now).
However, the body adapts and digestion and absorbtion can take place normally even without the presence of a GB. Besides, the adaptation has probably already taken place in most patients with GB disease because they have probably malfunctioned in the first place.
As for the appendix, it has a role: it’s “lymphoid tissue”, that is, part of the body’s defense mechanism to fight infections. Just as tonsils are. But when it’s inflammed it needs to be removed ‘cos it’s a danger rather than a help to the body.
Anyone would like to comment about the wisdom teeth? Me dunno ’bout that one.
